New Balance Unites Past and Future on the XC-72

Expanding their range of experimental new silhouettes, New Balance introduces a shoe that unites past future. The New Balance XC-72 hits the shelves this fall – with the help of a high-profile collaborator.

After all-time favorites from the 99X series and classics like the 574 were the stars of New Balance’s catalog, the brand started to put different numbers on the board lately. Next to the 550, shoes from the Shifted collection like the 327 and 237 caught the eyes of NB fans around the globe. According to product manager Alana Burton, the collection’s core principle is to describe the future through the eyes of the past – and vice versa. This idea of retro-futurism also informs the bold New Balance XC-72.

While the brand’s sneakers usually bank on a rather minimalist approach, this particular model takes a more daring route. A three-piece bottom with a carbon gum outsole serves as a modern interpretation of a traditonal running sole. In keeping with NB’s pledge to use environmental-friendly materials, the upper consists of chrome-free leather and suede.

To introduce the silhouette, New Balance once again teams up with French luxury leisurewear brand Casablance. As sustainable materials and current trends represent the future on the XC-72, its shape and colors take cues from the 70s. Designer Charlotte Lee took specifically took design ideas from 70s concept cars. By that, she hopes to inspire future creatives with a timeless design of her own.
